Critical Dharma is a space for people to study and research contemplative thought and apply it to society, culture, and politics. Our approach is to bridge the worlds of Asian and Asian American Studies, Religious Studies, Philosophy, Anthropology, Sociology, and Psychology to examine pivotal research in contemplative thought. Spawned from the Goldman Institute for Social Research, Critical Dharma is a environment to think and discuss pressing issues while examine ideas and philosophies in addressing suffering, inequality, and domination.
Throughout the year, Critical Dharma provides seminars relating to crucial works and ideas in contemplative theory and practice. All seminars will be geared around readings in the helms of contemplative thought and practice. In a more horizontal approach, the seminars will serve more as discussions around a particular piece of work or thought. We are not a "meditation group" but more of an interactive "Dharma talk" whereby both seasoned and amateur practitioners, students, and teachers can discuss ideas within contemplative thought. All talks will be guided by a facilitator but directed by the group.
Critical Dharma provides tiered seminars catered to the level of experience within Critical Dharma. Some participants may be more seasoned than others and that's why we developed a tiered system to cater to where someone is at with the material. Everyone must attend three seminars to advance to a higher tier in order to get familiarity with the group and how Critical Dharma works.
